About this Course

This is the second course in the PowerHA SystemMirror curriculum. It is specifically for PowerHA SystemMirror 7 and later. It will expand on the skills taught in the first class, introducing more complex cluster configurations, making use of resource group dependencies, DLPAR, WPAR and Smart Assists.

This course provides lectures and hands on labs in an instructor lead course environment, either in a face-to-face classroom or in a live virtual classroom environment (ILO - Instructor Led Online).

Audience Profile

This advanced course is for students who are experienced AIX system administrators with TCP/IP networking and AIX Logical Volume Manager (LVM) experience who are responsible for the planning and installation of a PowerHA SystemMirror 7.1 and later clustesr on an IBM power systems server running AIX 6.1 or later. The lab exercises are conducted on an AIX 6.1-level system.

At Course Completion

This course will expand on the basic configuration topics presented in PowerHA SystemMirror 7 Planning, Implementing, Customizing, Administrating (AN610) PowerHA SystemMirror 7 Planning, Implementing, Customizing, Administrating (ILO) (AX610). Having completed this course, you should be able to do the following:

  • Create a cluster using a Smart Assist
  • Expand a cluster to more than two nodes
  • Add resource groups to an existing cluster with dependencies
  • Configure a resource group to run within a WPAR
  • Implement DLPAR integration with a resource group using the built-in function
  • Implement application monitoring
  • Use the System Director Plug-in to configure, manage and monitor the cluster
  • Configure remote notification for specific, and significant events via email

Prerequisites

You should have:

  • knowledge on PowerHA SystemMirror or HACMP, and AIX TCPI/IP and LVM. This can be obtained by taking PowerHA SystemMirror 7 Planning, Implementing, Customizing, Administrating (AN61G)

Course Outline

  • Introduction / review of PowerHA concepts
  • Creating a cluster using Smart Assists
  • Expand an existing cluster
  • Add two nodes to an existing two node cluster
  • Manually add TSM to an existing active-passive cluster to create an active-active cluster (with the existing HTTP application)
  • Using the DB2 Smart Assist, add DB2 to the cluster using node3 and node4
  • Create a parent child relationship between the HTTP application and the DB2 application
  • Create application monitors
  • Incorporate a Resource Groups into a WPAR
  • Use DLPAR to dynamically modify CPU or memory
  • Configure and Use the PowerHA System Director Plug-in
  • Explore Remote Notification Methods, including setup to send a text message to student phones
